What is Luxmuralis?

David Harper is the Composer for ‘Luxmuralis’, an artistic collaboration working with Artist Peter Walker (Sculptor).

‘Luxmuralis’ is the name given to the artistic collaboration Peter Walker Sculptor and David Harper Composer, who specialise in immersive fine art, light and sound installations around the UK and abroad. Creating works across multiple media and presentation formats. Core to our work is the exploration and development of fine art tradition through new media and place contemporary fine art, light and sound production in an art historical context. Luxmuralis take art onto the streets and provide access to visual artwork in public as well as unexpected places.

Created with the support of Cumberland Council’s destination management team, the event was part of a new programme of events called ‘The Light District’, curated by the council’s Discover Carlisle team. ‘Space – God, The Universe and Everything’ by Luxmuralis took people on a walking journey through St Bees Priory, revealing the universe, galaxies, space, creation, and light through a variety of sound and light installations transforming the Priory. Thousands travelled from miles around to witness this unique and spectacular immersive artwork in this beautiful historic coastal setting.

Developed from the concept of “Son et Lumiere” our fully curated immersive fine art experiences combine the qualities of light and sound through contemporary media and years of experience as fine artists. Luxmuralis created the first ever model and method introducing such unique installations inside the interiors of Cathedrals and sacred spaces – paving the way for such spaces to be transformed and encouraging new audiences to engage with artwork as well as the space it envelops. Audiences are immersed in a fine art experience that brings such ancient monumental and sacred spaces to life. Viewers become part of the artwork as they physically journey through the spectacular sound and light which is described as ‘evocative and powerful’ by hundreds of thousands who have experienced Luxmuralis.

Poppy Fields at the Tower

For nine nights in November, including Remembrance Day, the Tower of London will be illuminated with an immersive sound and light show to commemorate the First and Second World Wars. Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that cares for the Tower of London, has partnered with Luxmuralis to present Poppy Fields at the Tower, a light and sound show incorporating artwork which reflects on the two World Wars. Visitors are invited inside the fortress for the evening experience, where the inner walls of the Tower will be illuminated with historic photographs, documents and artwork, accompanied by music composed by David Harper, and poetry recordings. Discovery – Chester Cathedral

‘Discovery’ was a spectacular sound and light experience event at Chester Cathedral. Themed around ‘Science and Space’ the installation invited people to ponder their relationship with our planet and beyond. Discovery was an immersive journey for people to walk through and explore Chester Cathedral in a new light, inviting them to fully immerse themselves in the artwork, and consider what humans have achieved in our place in the world. Sound and light art took visitors on a journey through space, and gave them the chance to see original footage of the rocket launch, as well as to explore the creation story and the Big Bang and view the of Earth as if looking back from space under a galaxy of stars. Discovery was designed to enable people to explore and contemplate the contributions of science and human understanding of the physical world around us, and the artwork explored chemistry and biology and interpreted, artistically, the scale of molecules cells and DNA, as well as exploring the history of science and its contributions to humanity, while reflecting upon famous scientists past and present.

Renaissance – Canterbury Cathedral

The Renaissance was a time of major transformation in the world, through cultural, artistic, political and economic growth from the 14th to the 17th century. Some of the greatest thinkers emerged through this period, changing the world forever. Luxmuralis invite the viewer to become immersed in the greatest paintings and artworks of the time, to explore through light art and bespoke compositions the wonder and awe that revolutionised Europe, and bridged the gap from the dark ages to modern day civilisation. Digitally and artistically created by artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, with soundscapes composed by David Harper and projections created by sculptor Peter Walker, Renaissance is an unmissable experience for people of all ages.

Force of Nature (The Elements) – Bristol Cathedral

Visitors were invited for a dazzling journey of light and sound as the Cathedral architecture turned into a virtual canvas for the forces of nature and the elements. They saw the flaming power of volcanoes as an exploration of ‘Fire’, were immersed in the sky and environment as a conveyance of ‘Air’, could watch as the Earth evolved through dramatic historic and artistic imagery and took in the immensity of the oceans and storms, while sharing stories linked to ‘Water’. The accompanying bespoke soundtrack ensured a fully immersive and awe-inspiring world of natural elements.
